– The fools, the fools, the fools! They’ve left us our Fenian dead. And while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace!

Welcome to the Rebel City Tour, guys! My name’s Dara, I’m a local storyteller guide from Cork City. A True Cork Rebel. And I’d like to welcome you all on the tour. Now, I’m just going to go over the tour. I’m at the starting point at the fountain on Grand Parade. The starting point of the trail.

I’m just going to go over five quick guidelines to help get you started. Okay, guideline number one. The trail is about education and entertainment, but really it’s about having fun, guys. It’s about having fun with history. That’s the goal of the tour. Now, I try to put an emphasis on the female contribution to the struggle, the struggle of women during the struggle for Irish independence.

The trail is mostly centered around the War of Independence, the Irish struggle for freedom. 1919 to 1921 the trail includes tales of murder, assassination and spycraft. All on the streets of Cork City. You’re gonna love it.

Okay, now it’s about education and entertainment. But really it’s about having fun. Okay, next one, guys. Toilet breaks, if you need to take a toilet break, just stop into a restaurant or a pub. You might have to make a small purchase, but generally that’s fine.

Let’s see, rules of the road. This is an urban trail. It’s a walking trail in Cork City Center. You might be listening, you might have headphones, you might not. Be extra careful around traffic. Be extra careful around bikes, other pedestrians, potholes in the pavement etc.

Just don’t take any chances, and don’t walk on the cycle lanes. So, guys, be extra careful.

Okay, questions, guys. If you have questions, you can post online. There will be resources at the end of the tour where you can do further study and read up on any of the particular actions or stories in our tour. And don’t forget to take photos, guys.

NB: some minor errata in the videos have been corrected in the transcript text. Some of the words, in particular the Irish words, are spelled phonetically.
